Short biography

I received my Master degree in Computer Science from the Università degli Studi di Milano, Italy, in 1992. From 1992 to 1993 I had a grant of the National Research Council (CNR) for the Telecommunication Research Project (Progetto Finalizzato Telecomunicazioni). In 1999 I received my Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the Università degli Studi di Milano. My Ph.D. Thesis concerned ``Primitives for Reliable Group Communication in Distributed Systems with Mobile Hosts'', advisors Prof. Francesco Tisato and Prof. Gian Paolo Rossi of the Computer Science Department of the Università degli Studi di Milano, and Prof. Mario Gerla of the Computer Science Department of the UCLA.
From october 1999 I am an assistant professor, and from march 2006 I am an associate professor at the Computer Science Department of the Università degli Studi di Milano.

Research Interests

My research interests include the design of fault-tolerant algorithms for group communication problems in distributed systems and the implementation and performance evaluation of group communication protocols for wireless networks.
In particular, my research activity concerns the following fields:

• Quality-of-Service: I was involved in a research project funded by the MURST, aiming at designing and evaluating multicast protocols to support Quality-of-Service in multi-domain networks.

• Deflection Networks: Deflection Networks have been studied by the Progetto Finalizzato Telecomunicazioni (Telecommunication Project) funded by the CNR (Italian National Research Council). Several virtual circuit protocols have been designed, that use different resource reservation policies to guarantee the maintenance of the packet arrival rate at the destination. A multicast protocol has been designed, to allow the distribution of multicast packets over the point-to-point deflection network topology. A probabilistic model of the deflection networks has been realized to analytically evaluate the behaviour of the protocols.

• Agreement protocols: Many applications need reliable group communication services. Two protocols have been developed that solve the Uniform Causal and Uniform Atomic Broadcast; the latter one has been compared with other algorithms proposed in the literature. We are currently studying the problem of realizing an architecture to provide reliable group communication services in asynchronous systems.

• Mobile systems: For what concerns single-hop networks, a survey has been realized in which we compare the main approaches proposed in the literature to allow mobile hosts to access distributed databases located on both fixed and mobile stations. We are currently evaluating the behaviour of an original protocol we have designed. We designed a Reliable Broadcast protocol for multi-hop networks; its performance has been evaluated by means of simulation techniques. Currently, we are focusing on the problem of the multicast routing in mobile ad-hoc networks.

• Security issues in WWW: We compared the characteristics of some protocols proposed in the literature to efficiently maintain authorization information to access web documents; the results are reported in a survey.
