Short Biography

Vincenzo Piuri is Full Professor in Computer Engineering at the University of Milan, Italy (since 2000), where he has also been Department Chair (2007-2012). He was Associate Professor at Politecnico di Milano, Italy (1992-2000), visiting professor at the University of Texas at Austin, USA (summers 1996-1999), and visiting researcher at George Mason University, USA (summers 2012-2013). He received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from Politecnico di Milano, Italy.

His main research interests are: theory and industrial applications of neural networks, pattern analysis and recognition, machine learning, intelligent measurement systems, biometrics, signal and image processing for industrial applications, fault tolerance, application-specific digital processing architectures, and arithmetic architectures. His research was performed in national and European projects funded by industries, the European Union, the Italian Ministry of Research, and the National Research Council of Italy. He published innovative results in more than 350 papers in international journals, international conference proceedings, and book chapters.

Vincenzo Piuri was very active in promoting technical activities and internationalization, especially in the IEEE. He served on various technical committees of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, the IEEE Computer Society, the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society, the IEEE Systems Council, and the IEEE Biometrics Council. He was Founding Chair or Co-Chair of various technical committees: Technical Committee on Emerging Technologies (2003-05) and Task Force on Homeland Security of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society Technical Committee on Intelligent System Applications (2003-05), and Technical Committees on Emergent Technologies (since 1994), Intelligent Measurement Systems (1997-2002), and Security and Contraband Detection (since 2002) of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society. He was Vice Chair of the IEEE NTDC Technical Committee on Biometrics (2005-08) and significantly contributed to the creation of the IEEE Biometric Council (2006-08). He also served as Chair of the Technical Activity Committee on Defect Tolerance of the IEEE Computer Society Test Technology Technical Committee (1995-2006).

For 15+ years, he served on many technical program committees of international conferences and organized more than 60 international conferences and workshops, mainly sponsored by the IEEE, as General Chair, Program Chair, or in other positions. The main recent conferences that he organized are: IEEE Symposium Series on Computational Intelligence, Paris, France (2011, honorary chair), IEEE-INNS International Joint Conference on Neural Networks, Barcelona, Spain (2010, program chair), IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference, Austin, TX, USA (2010, program chair), IEEE Symposium Series on Computational Intelligence, Nashville, TN, USA (2009, general chair), IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference, Singapore (2009, general chair), and IEEE-INNS International Joint Conference on Neural Networks, Atlanta, GA, USA (2009, program vice chair).

Vincenzo Piuri accomplished several editorial activities. He is Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Systems Journal (2013-15) and served on the editorial boards of various international journals, including the IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks (2002-04) and the IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement (1997-2002). He also was Vice President for Publications both of the IEEE Systems Council (2008-11) and the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society (2002-04).

He was active also in educational activities. He is Chair of the IEEE Biometrics Certification Committee (since 2008) and was Vice President of Education of the IEEE Biometrics Council (2008-09). He was Director of the Ph.D. Degree Program in Computer Science, University of Milan, Italy (2005-07). He was Director of the International Master's Degree Program on Soft Computing for Industrial Applications (2003-04), University of Milan (Italy), with the support of the IEEE Neural Networks Society, IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society, INNS - International Neural Networks Society, and ENNS - European Neural Network Society; and Scientific Co-Director of the NATO-IEEE-INNS-ENNS Advanced Study Institute on Neural Networks for Instrumentation, Measurement, and Related Industrial Applications, Crema, Italy (2001).

He was also working in promoting activities for IEEE members and the scientific and technological communities worldwide. He served as Vice President for Members Activities in the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (2003-04), Founding Chair both of the IEEE Systems Council Italy Chapter (2008-09) and the IEEE Biometrics Council Italy Chapter (2009), IEEE Student Branch Counselor at Politecnico di Milano (1993-2004).
